:No Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not ‘gayab’, as that image from the party’s social media handle suggests. He is busy preparing and strategising for a strong response to terrorism and Pakistan, and to get justice for the victims of the Pahalgam tragedy. The Congress may have shot itself in the foot by questioning the commitment of PM Modi towards the nation at such a time.

The BJP has castigated the Congress for putting out the image which is clearly in bad taste. Worse, some Pakistani social media accounts are now using that image to take potshots at India. This was the last thing that was required at this moment when national security, and unity, must be paramount.

Ironically, this came from the Congress just a couple of hours after Congress media head Jairam Ramesh had reined in Congress leaders not to speak out of line on the Pahalgam tragedy. The Congress had struck a conciliatory note at the all-party meeting as well, as Rahul Gandhi said his party will back any step that the Prime Minister takes. But that did not last.

For the record, PM Modi cut short his Saudi Arabia trip to rush back to India after hearing about the Pahalgam terror attack. He had instructed Home Minister Amit Shah from Jeddah to rush to Pahalgam the same evening. Upon arriving at the airport in Delhi the next morning, the PM was briefed by the Foreign Secretary at the airport itself.

Later in the day, the PM chaired the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting where major decisions such as putting a pause to the Indus Water Treaty and closing the Attari Integrated Check Post were taken.

The next day, the government also called an all-party meeting. The PM does not attend all-party meetings, as the convention for such meetings even before Parliament sessions is that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chairs them. The Congress had objected to why the PM did not attend the all-party meeting. It has also questioned the PM’s subsequent Bihar trip.

However, the fact remains that the PM’s Bihar trip was a pre-scheduled one, and was announced even before his Saudi Arabia trip. Modi had cancelled the Kanpur leg of this tour as mark of grief and solidarity with the family of Pahalgam victim Shubham Dwivedi who belonged to Kanpur.

The PM has made two public addresses, one in Bihar and the second during Mann Ki Baat this Sunday, where he promised justice to the victims of Pahalgam, and the harshest punishment for the perpetrators and backers of the attack.

The Congress is now demanding a Special Session of Parliament on the Pahalgam attack, but by firing the salvo of the headless image of the PM, the opposition party may have committed the same mistake as it did by questioning the efficacy of the Balakot strike in 2019.
