Shocking visuals have emerged showing policemen thrashing a temple security guard, Ajith Kumar, in Sivaganga district before his death in custody last week. The video, accessed by News18, shows the extent of the assault. The death of the guard has triggered a widespread outrage over alleged custodial torture.
Following mounting pressure and stern observations from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which said the case must be “viewed seriously,” five policemen were arrested late Monday. Sources told News18 that the post-mortem report revealed multiple injury marks on the victim’s body, pointing to severe physical assault while in police custody.
On June 27, a woman visiting the temple with her mother asked Ajith Kumar to help her park her car. However, Ajith sought help from others to park it as he did not know how to drive. Later, the woman complained that 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments were missing from the bag she had kept in the car. Based on her complaint, the Tirupuvanam police picked up Ajith Kumar and a few others for questioning, and released them on the same day.
However, Ajith Kumar was later detained by the special team for further questioning. During the second round of interrogation, he complained of uneasiness. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
However, Ajith’s family members alleged that the cause of death is not natural, but rather torture during detention.
The alleged custodial death of a 27-year-old man from Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district has sparked massive public outrage and drawn sharp judicial scrutiny, putting the MK Stalin-led DMK government under intense pressure.
