National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar on Sunday claimed that she was not allowed to meet the Kolkata law college student who was allegedly gang-raped. She also cited “non-cooperation” and added that when she talked to the victim’s parents on Saturday night, they were tense, but they did not pick up her call today.

“Yesterday till midnight I spoke to the victim’s parents. I told them I would come and meet them. They were very tense and wanted cooperation. Today in the morning when we tried to reach them, they did not pick up the phone. When I asked the police, they said they don’t know. When I asked SP Bauruipur, he said their house was under lock and key,” she said.

“I visited, and they cooperated, but the pace of occurrence was sealed; they did not allow me to record. They said if we record they will seize it. How is that possible? I’m going to Delhi and will discuss and give a report. We are disappointed,” she added.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the father of the victim spoke to the media and expressed faith in the judiciary.

“…I have faith in the Kolkata Police as well as the judiciary of India. Whatever they conclude after the full investigation will be accepted,” he told IANS.

Majumdar had earlier said that she plans to visit the survivor’s house to assess the situation, understand the family’s needs, and evaluate the police’s response.

“We have spoken to the officer-in-charge, who informed us that the first visit will be to the girl’s house in Champahati, where we will speak with her father, mother, and any other legal guardian. We will ask the family about the current situation, what actually happened, whether proper protection has been given, whether the police took timely and appropriate action, and if the family needs any further help. We will also inquire about the progress of the investigation,” she told ANI earlier in the day.

A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the college campus on Wednesday, June 25. The incident has drawn massive backlash to TMC, the ruling government in West Bengal. The police have also arrested three people, including the main accused. A five-member special team has also been constituted to probe the incident.
