Despite paying 55 EMIs regularly, one delayed payment this month allegedly led to pressure and threats from the bank’s recovery team

The son claimed his parents received over 200 calls a day. Recovery agents also followed and confronted them regularly.

A couple from Ludhiana, Punjab, allegedly died by suicide after facing repeated harassment from private bank recovery agents over loan repayment. The couple, Jasbir Singh (60) and his wife Kuldeep Kaur (59), reportedly consumed poison inside their shop located beneath their hosiery factory in Gandhi Nagar Market.

According to their son, they had taken a loan against property (LAP) of around Rs 2.35 crore from a private bank to run their business. Despite paying 55 EMIs regularly, one delayed payment this month allegedly led to pressure and threats from the bank’s recovery team.

The son claimed his parents received over 200 calls a day. Recovery agents also followed and confronted them regularly. Just last week, officials allegedly came to their home in Harbanspura and misbehaved with them. When their son intervened, he too was allegedly threatened.

On Thursday morning, their son found them unconscious in the shop. Before losing consciousness, they told him they had consumed poison. He rushed them to DMC Hospital, but both were declared dead.

Police confirmed that a suicide note was found at the scene, in which the couple accused bank officials of issuing threats and subjecting them to mental harassment. The note also described abusive behaviour and warned that their home would be taken over.

SHO Gagandeep Singh of Division No. 4 police station said the bodies have been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination.

Singh stated that a case has been registered and an investigation is currently underway. The name of the private bank has not yet been disclosed.

“We are thoroughly investigating the matter, and strict action will be taken against whoever is found responsible,” he added.
