In a shocking incident late Thursday evening, Harjit Kaur, the mother of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and a man accompanying her were shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants in Punjab’s Batala, police confirmed on Friday.
The attack occurred around 9:30 pm on Qadian Road, which falls under the Civil Lines area of Batala. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Paramveer Singh, the attackers opened fire while Harjit Kaur and the other victim, identified as Karanvir Singh, were seated inside a car. Both victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the face, chest, and abdomen, suggesting the attackers had a clear intent to kill.
Karanvir Singh was declared dead on arrival at the Batala Civil Hospital, while Harjit Kaur, who was critically wounded, was rushed to a hospital in Amritsar. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, the DSP said.
“Unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted their car and opened indiscriminate fire before fleeing the scene. A case has been registered and multiple teams have been formed to track down the culprits,” DSP Singh stated, adding that the motive behind the killing is still under investigation.
Harjit Kaur was a former elected member of the village panchayat in Bhagwanpur, where the family hails from. The brazen nature of the attack has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about the escalating gang rivalry in Punjab.
Her son, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, one of Punjab’s most notorious gangsters, was recently detained under the PIT-NDPS Act and shifted from Bathinda Central Jail to Silchar Jail in Assam in March this year. He is also one of the key accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, apart from facing multiple other criminal charges related to extortion, drug trafficking, and organized crime.
The police are currently pursuing several leads, including the possibility of this being an act of gang retaliation linked to Bhagwanpuria’s criminal network. Authorities have heightened security in the area and appealed to the public for any information that could help track the shooters.
