Priya Sachdev Kapur opened up about her difficult first marriage before Sunjay Kapur.
Priya Sachdev Kapur, wife of the late Sunjay Kapur, recently broke her silence on her emotionally difficult first marriage with American hotelier Vikram Chatwal. Her interview with Kin and Kindness on YouTube has gone viral days after Sunjay Kapur passed away in London on June 12 at the age of 53. According to reports, Sunjay Kapur, who was previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, suffered a fatal heart attack after reportedly swallowing a bee during a polo match.
In the interview, Priya opened up about how she believed she had found the perfect match with Chatwal but ignored red flags early on. “My ex-husband ticked all the boxes… He went to Wharton, worked at Morgan Stanley. I did mathematics at UCLA, a double major with UCLA and LSE… So I thought this is a perfect match,” she said, adding, “You know how you do your career path, but it doesn’t always work. I thought I had it all right… but I guess I chose wrong.”
Priya revealed she realised something was off early in the marriage, especially after becoming pregnant. “When I had her and I realised, a few 15 to 20 weeks into my pregnancy, I realised this marriage is not right. But I still continued to make this work,” she shared. Five years into the marriage, she chose to walk away for her and her daughter’s well-being.
She emotionally recalled the support she received during the separation. “My ex-in-laws called me apologising… I wasn’t valued or appreciated for the sacrifices I made. That was one victory.” Priya also fought a long custody battle and emerged victorious. “The divorce wasn’t easy, but I won those,” she added.
Priya further spoke about reclaiming her peace of mind, “The voices in my head didn’t bother me anymore… When I controlled the voices in my head, I looked at life differently.”
