Kajol reveals Ishq took 300 days to shoot, speaks about feeling isolated on set and how she grew closer to Ajay Devgn during the long shoot.
Ishq released in 1997.
When Ishq hit cinemas in 1997, it was praised for its comedy and soundtrack. What many don’t know is that the film took an astonishing 300 days to make. Kajol recently opened up about the emotional toll the extended shoot took on her during an interview with The Mashable.
Recalling the long months on set, Kajol admitted she often found herself on the sidelines—as Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla became a tight trio with the maker and she gradually drifted away. “Aamir was very friendly with the director and so was Juhi so these three were a close knit group and then there was Ajay and me. And eventually, it was just me. There were certain days on set when I was not willing to talk to anybody,” she shared.
With shoots running 8–10 hours a day over nearly a year, Kajol said she needed time to herself. “We spent 300 days together. That film took 300 days to be made. We have no idea what we did for so many days. We used to spend 8-10 hours on set every day. I can’t be talking to all of them at all times. I can try to be social but I can’t constantly be chatting,” she explained, adding that even extroverts need space to recharge.
During those long, emotionally taxing days, Kajol said she formed a bond with her co-star and future husband Ajay Devgn. Their friendship, sparked on Ishq, later blossomed into romance when they met on Hulchul (1995). Two years after Ishq, the couple married in 1999. They have since spent 26 years together, raising daughter Nysa and son Yug.
The film also featured Dalip Tahil, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Johnny Lever, and Mohan Joshi, with music composed by Anu Malik. And true to Ishq lore, during its 26th anniversary throwback, Ajay jokingly wrote: “Wasn’t this the film where I proposed to you with your own ring?”
