A young woman living in Bengaluru’s outskirts was sexually harassed and physically attacked by a group of five men allegedly under the influence of cannabis. Police have yet to identify the assailants or make any arrest in the case.

The incident took place on Sunday near Renuka Yellamma locality in Mailasandra, Anekal taluk.

According to the police, the woman had recently moved to the Renuka Yellamma area with her brother. On the day of the attack, she was alone while going to a local shop to buy groceries. The group reportedly blocked her way on the road and behaved inappropriately towards her, News18 Kannada reported.

When the woman resisted, the group became violent and assaulted her. Her screams alerted local residents, who rushed to help but were also attacked by the group. The assailants fled when the crowd grew larger.

The attackers then tried to enter the woman’s rented home and continued to cause a disturbance. Despite efforts by locals to stop them, the group persisted in their aggressive behaviour.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and some bystanders also recorded videos on their mobile phones. This footage is now key evidence in the police investigation.

The woman and witnesses filed a complaint at Bannerghatta police station on the same evening. However, residents have accused the police of delay in arresting the suspects. Family members and locals are demanding immediate and strict action.

This incident has sparked anger and fear in the community amid growing reports of rising drug use and related crimes in Bengaluru. Young people are increasingly seen under the influence of substances such as cannabis, which has contributed to a rise in harassment cases, particularly targeting women.

Residents are calling on the police to increase safety measures and take swift action. Meanwhile, the Bannerghatta police have registered a case and say they are actively investigating and searching for the accused.
