A 28-year-old woman pilot was allegedly sexually harassed during a ride in an Uber cab in Mumbai, police said. The incident is said to have taken place on Thursday.
The disturbing incident took place at around 11.15 pm when the woman was heading back to her house in Ghatkopar from south Mumbai, a police official said on Saturday.
Subsequently, the cab driver and two others were booked.
It is learnt that the woman’s husband is a Navy officer and he is yet to get a government accommodation, so he stays at a Navy residential complex while the woman lives in Ghatkopar, the woman told the police.
According to news agency PTI, her husband booked an Uber ride for her after they had dinner at a restaurant in south Mumbai on Thursday.
In her complaint, the woman told the police that the driver took another route unexpectedly after 25 minutes into the journey and allowed two men to board the cab. She added that one of them, who sat in the backseat next to her, touched her inappropriately.
She further mentioned in her complaint that when she yelled at him, the man threatened her but the cab driver did not care to intervene.
After covering a certain distance, the accused persons noticed police checking ahead on the highway, following which both the male passengers got down and fled, the complainant told police.
Finally, the driver dropped the woman at her house and when she confronted the driver, he did not give her any explanation as to why he allowed the two men to sit in the cab, she further told police.
The next morning, the woman narrated the ordeal to her husband. Soon after, the couple lodged a complaint with the Ghatkopar police.
A case was registered against the three men under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 75(1) (sexual harassment), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (common intention).
An investigation into the matter is underway.
