The Royals, starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, is slated for an OTT release on Netflix on May 9. Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, this romantic comedy show marks a fresh on-screen pairing with the two. Since its cast announcement, Netflix’s show has garnered immense buzz on social media. In a recent interview, Bhumi and Ishaan opened up about working together for their upcoming project and how they face social media criticism.
During an interview with HT City, the two actors shared their working experience. Bhumi revealed that the makers called the two of them for a joint script narration for better understanding. She stated, “We went through a chemistry read. We had never worked together. We didn’t really know each other as such. I was also like, ‘interesting’ initially.”
Ishaan further revealed that the unique storyline of the show provided a sense of freedom to them. “Working with an actor par excellence like Bhumi was a delight. I don’t think either of us has got to do something like this in our careers yet. We’ve got 8 episodes to flesh it out. The fun is that it wasn’t just all lovey-dovey. There was the cat-and-dog relationship, all the spewing of hate and egos coming in,” he stated.
Any new or experimental cast pairing in the social media age is frequently greeted with some criticism or hatred. However, the two actors claim that they never thought about it. “If it’s gonna happen, it will happen. Today, trolling has become people’s pastime. It doesn’t matter, though,” Bhumi Pednekar said.
Furthermore, Ishaan spoke about their approach to handling criticism, saying, “It was between not doing this if we paid attention, or this. And since we loved the script so much, everything else didn’t matter.”
Produced under Pritish Nandy Communications, the Royals also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Lisa Mishra, Kavya Trehan, Udit Arora and Sumukhi Suresh in key roles. Since its trailer launch, the web series has generated considerable buzz on social media.
