A communal tension erupted in Uttarakhand’s Nainital late on Wednesday night after a 12-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 60-year-old man. Locals protested against the assault outside the police station demanding strict action.

The accused was identified as Osman. He is a contractor by profession and was arrested on Wednesday after the incident came to light.

However, communal tension erupted in the area with members of some Hindu outfits vandalising some shops owned by members of the Muslim community, reported PTI.

Security was beefed up in the area, but the protests continued past midnight. Senior officials, including Superintendent of Police (City) Jagdish Chandra, intervened and assured the protesters that strict action would be taken against the accused.

An FIR was also filed against the contractor under section 65 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at Mallital police station.

According to the officials cited by PTI, the crowd raised slogans against Pakistan, and also damaged vehicles and pelted stones at houses in the locality, shattering their window panes.

The situation was brought under control after midnight with the police patrolling till 2 am to prevent any further escalation.

To keep the situation peaceful, a heavy police presence has been arranged across the city, said SP Chandra.
