Aamir Khan revealed that when he and Reena Dutta were separating, they saw a marriage counsellor for 1.5 years, even though the actor was initially against it.

Aamir Khan shares a good equation with both his ex-wives Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. The Bollywood superstar recently revealed that he took marriage counseling during his separation from Reena Dutta. He said that they saw a marriage counselor for 1.5 years. While he was initially strongly against counselling, over time, his experience changed. He said that after 2-3 sessions, he began to trust the counsellor, and gradually opened up.
In a conversation with Pinkvilla, Aamir Khan was asked about the first time he sought therapy. He said, “Main jab pehli dafa… therapy toh nahi thi woh (My first time… I wouldn’t call it therapy); I think it was more like counseling.” He continued, “Jab Reena aur main alag ho rahe the tab kareeban 1.5 years marriage counsellor ke pass gaye the. Woh mera pehla experience tha, therapy aur counselling ko lekar. Aur mujhe yaad hai ki main uske sakht khilaaf tha. Main bohot khilaaf tha. (When Reena and I were separating, we went to a marriage counsellor for about 1.5 years. That was my first experience with therapy and counselling. And I remember, I was completely against it. I was very much against it).” He told Reena that he did not want to talk to some stranger about what he was feeling, or what their relationship was like. “How could I open my heart to a complete stranger?” said Aamir.
However, Reena Dutta insisted that they should go, and since it was important, Aamir agreed. He explained that his experience with the counsellor turned out to be completely different from what he had feared. “Because in the beginning, I also stayed quiet, spoke very little. But after 2–3 sessions, I started to build trust in the therapist,” he said.
Aamir then added that when one has a good therapist, a sense of trust gradually develops. As that trust deepens, it becomes easier to open up about things they were initially reluctant to express.
For the unversed, Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta in 1986. They are parents to two children- daughter Ira Khan and son Junaid Khan. Aamir and Reena got divorced in 2002.
