The Academy confirmed AI-made films can compete for Oscars, but human involvement will influence winners. .

Films made with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to win Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that films created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) can still compete for top awards at the Oscars.
On Monday, the Academy introduced new rules stating that the use of AI or other digital tools would not give films an advantage or disadvantage in the nomination process. Generative AI, which can create text, images, audio, and video from simple text prompts, was used in some films that received major recognition at the Oscars in March. However, the Academy made it clear that human involvement will still be considered when selecting the winners.
These new guidelines, which include rules about the use of AI in filmmaking, were recommended by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council. In addition, the Academy announced that all members must watch every nominated film in a category before they can participate in the final voting.
The role of AI in filmmaking gained attention after Adrian Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, a film that used AI to enhance his Hungarian accent. Similar AI technology was also used to improve singing voices in Emilia Perez, which won an Oscar for Best Musical. AI’s ability to replicate voices, modify performances, and make subtle changes to appearances has made it increasingly popular in both the film and music industries.
“The academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award,” the new Oscars rules noted.
Closer home, in India, in a groundbreaking move for the Kannada film industry, Narasimha Murthy, a priest from the Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, has created a film with a modest budget and limited resources, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) instead of traditional actors, musicians, or crew. The result? Love You — Sandalwood’s first AI-generated film. Murthy teamed up with Nuthan, a graphic designer who transitioned into AI technology, to bring his dream project to life.
