Manjhi railway station, opened in January 2023, lacks a ticket counter. Over 1,000 daily passengers risk fines or jail for traveling without tickets

Chapra’s Manjhi railway station in the state of Bihar, a key stop on the Chapra-Ballia rail section, presents a peculiar situation. Inaugurated in January 2023, the station witnesses a significant daily influx of over a thousand passengers. However, it lacks a functioning ticket counter, despite its presence. This forces passengers to either purchase tickets from other stations or board trains without one, risking fines, harassment, and even imprisonment during inspections.
Local resident Ankit Kumar Singh, in conversation with Local18, highlighted the plight of daily commuters like himself who travel to Chapra in Patna, for studies.
“Although the station was built and inaugurated in 2023, tickets remain unavailable. Consequently, people board the train without a ticket and purchase one at the next station. If an inspection occurs in the meantime, passengers are fined by the ticket inspector or sent to jail, causing significant trouble,” he said.
He emphasised the urgency for ticket availability, given the high passenger volume, and mentioned that a written application to the Divisional Railway Manager remains unaddressed.
Railway employees, requesting anonymity, disclosed that the delay stems from the lack of authorisation from higher authorities to commence ticket sales. They assured that tickets would be available to passengers as soon as the order is received.
