A 16-year-old boy was detained on Saturday for allegedly vandalising a BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) bus and a few other vehicles in an eastern suburb of Mumbai.

The incident took place on Miniland Society Tank Road in Bhandup in the afternoon, said officials, adding that there were passengers on the BEST bus at the time of vandalisation.

A video of the incident which has now surfaced on social media shows the accused wielding a sword, smashing glass panels, and attacking an autorickshaw and a water tanker.

An official said that the youth used abusive language and shattered the glass of the BEST bus, causing damage estimated at Rs 70,000, reported news agency PTI.

A case has been filed for the damage inflicted on the bus, nearby rickshaws, and water tankers.

While the motive for the vandalism remains unclear, a police official told PTI that the teenager had prior run-ins with the law on three separate occasions.
