The intriguing video opens with a group of goons asking Suriya to put on a show, followed by the introduction of the key characters played by Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Joju George and others. Punching through a wall in frustration, beating and murdering men, while also smoking and consuming alcohol, Suriya showcases a range of emotions, depicting the struggle to stay away from the world of crime and violence. In a touching moment, Suriya’s character is also heard saying, “Our separated lives over the past years almost changed her into a Buddha, and me into a demon.” Navigating through challenges as he confronts the forces compelling him to resort to violence, Suriya’s exceptional performance as the gangster makes it a must-watch.
Retro, co-produced by Suriya and Jyotika under their banner 2D Entertainment, marks yet another professional collaboration of the married couple. The film, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is slated for a grand theatrical release on May 1.
Recently, during a chat with Vikatan, the director opened up about his experience of working with Suriya. He said, “Right from the way his eyes move to the dialogue delivery and body language, Suriya sir has a firm grasp on everything. He is a pure artist, and I could feel his passion ring through till the dubbing process. He loves cinema. He only wants to do films that are new to him, both as an actor and as a person. He doesn’t want to take anything for granted.”
Suriya’s last big screen appearance was in Kanguva, wherein he portrayed both a warrior and a bounty hunter called Francis. The film also starred Disha Patani and Bobby Deol in lead roles. After Retro, Suriya will next appear in Suriya 45. The action-packed entertainer, directed by RJ Balaji, also features Trisha Krishnan in lead role.
