Singer-rapper Bobby Brown has admitted that pop icon Britney Spears has “butchered” the cover of his 1988 song My Prerogative. The track, produced by Teddy Riley, is the second single of Bobby’s hit second studio album, Don’t Be Cruel. Britney covered the song in 2004. It was one of the three tracks on her compilation album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. The song, however, was produced by Bloodshy & Avant instead of Riley.

On Wednesday, Bobby Brown appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast Club Shay Shay. During their candid interaction, Shannon asked Bobby to name an artist who did justice to his music samples. To this, Bobby Brown had a rather disappointing answer. He said, “I do not think they did it justice. I do not think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs.”

Taking the example of Britney Spears, Bobby Brown added, “Britney Spears butchered My Prerogative. Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchery (sic) that I could not take. I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking… Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know.”

Bobby Brown, however, learned an important lesson from the experience. “I got to hear it (in order for it to be cleared) because you do not know what these kids will say these days. These kids say some s*** that… you do not want your song associated with it,” he explained.

Britney Spears incorporated drums, a modern R&B flow and synthesizers to Bobby Brown’s My Prerogative. That’s not all. She also altered the pronouns, making the track appear from a female’s perspective. Additionally, Britney also included a sensual introduction to the number.

Besides My Prerogative, Bobby Brown is credited to songs like Can You Stand The Rain, Every Little Step, I’m Still in Love with You, If It Isn’t Love and Cool It Now among others.

Meanwhile, Britney Spears’ fans are awaiting the release of her biopic. Titled The Woman in Me, the film will be directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Universal Pictures. The biopic’s release date is yet to be announced.
