The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed the appeals of members of the Chhota Rajan gang in the 2010 Bhendi Bazaar double murder case.
Mohammad Ali Sheikh and Pranay Rane were sentenced to life imprisonment. They were convicted under sections of murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
As per the prosecution’s case, the firing took place on 13 February 2010. Four people arrived at the spot where Dawood’s aide, Asif Khan, was sitting in Phool Galli, within the jurisdiction of the JJ Marg police station, and opened fire on Khan.
Apart from Khan, three other people were injured in the firing. While Khan managed to escape, Shakeel Modak, personal secretary of Congress leader Bhai Jagtap, and his friend Asif Qureshi, who had gone to meet Khan, sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.
It was alleged that the hit was ordered by Rajan’s henchman Umed, as Khan was a close aide of Dawood.
Police arrested Mohammed Ali John Mohammed Sheikh and Pranay Manohar Rane, two of the alleged assailants, on 23 October 2010. Two other people, Umed and Adnan Sayyed, were arrested in the case subsequently and were later acquitted.
