Netflix’s British drama Adolescence has been making waves for its raw and timely exploration of how the digital world is shaping young boys today. The four-part miniseries, created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, tells the unsettling story of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate. Each episode is filmed in a single continuous take.
At the heart of the show is Owen Cooper, who portrays Jamie. Though his performance has been widely lauded, the young actor recently revealed he hasn’t watched the full series himself. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cooper admitted, “I still haven’t watched it either. I just don’t like watching myself. And now Jack says it’s going into schools… that’s my worst nightmare!”
The show’s impact has extended beyond entertainment, with schools reportedly planning to screen it as a discussion tool — something Cooper clearly finds a bit too real.
He also spoke about how eye-opening the project was for him, especially when it came to learning about the darker corners of the internet. “I was glad I didn’t have any idea of what was going on — the emojis and the meanings behind them. I had no clue. And I don’t think my friends knew, but it’s obviously happening across the country. It’s not a made-up story.”
Stephen Graham, who co-created the series, also takes on the role of Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller. Since its debut on March 13, Adolescence has earned critical acclaim for its gripping storytelling and powerful performances. While there’s been buzz about a possible follow-up, no official word has come from Netflix or the creators just yet.
