A clash erupted between two groups during the Hanuman Jayanti procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district on Saturday, with visuals showing an instance of stone-pelting.

The incident occurred around 8 pm when the procession was passing near Colonelganj Mosque, said officials, adding that the trigger point was the exchange of slogans between members of two communities.

A video from the incident shows police officers wielding sticks as they disperse the crowd after the clashes. Another clip captured two groups engaging in a scuffle while stones were hurled at the police on the scene.

Superintendent Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar Sinha said that a few people were injured in the incident and that the situation was brought under control immediately.

“The procession was passing near Colonelganj Mosque during which slogans were raised among the two communities. We got to know that stone pelting also took place in which some people have been injured,” SP Sinha said.

“Force was immediately sent as soon as the information was received. The situation was brought under control within 15-20 minutes. Miscreants have been identified on the basis of video footage. The situation is normal…We appeal to the people not to pay attention to rumours,” he added.

Guna District Magistrate Kishore Kumar Kanyal also confirmed that the situation has been normalised and is being closely monitored.

“The situation is completely under control. We got to know that 2-3 people have been injured. We are monitoring from the control room. Do not pay attention to any kind of rumours,” Kanyal said.

He further informed that as part of police action, an FIR has been lodged against four miscreants and policemen were deployed in the area to tighten security.
