The White House on Friday replaced a portrait of former US President Barack Obama with a picture of Donald Trump depicting a moment after an assassination attempt last summer. The White House shared a small clip that showed the picture hung on the wall.
The caption on X read, “Some new artwork at the White House.” The picture is from last Summer when Trump raised ‘Fight, Fight, Fight’ saying.
Obama’s portrait, unveiled in 2022, was initially displayed in the foyer on the State Floor, near the staircase to the presidential residence. The White House has confirmed that it remains in the foyer but has been relocated to the opposite wall where a portrait of former President George W Bush once hung.
Plans are to place Bush’s portrait near his father’s, former President George HW Bush, which is positioned on the staircase leading to the residence.
Traditionally, portraits of the two most recent presidents are displayed in the foyer.
The new portrait, shared by the White House on its official X account, depicts the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Trump during a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was injured in the ear and raised his fist, shouting “Fight, fight, fight!”.
This became a significant rallying cry for his successful reelection campaign.
The Trump portrait was hung without prior notice, which is unusual — though Trump’s situation is unique as he is both the current and a former president. The US hasn’t encountered this scenario since Grover Cleveland served non-consecutive terms in the 1880s and 1890s.
In 2022, then-President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, welcomed former President Obama and his wife, Michelle, to the White House for the unveiling of Obama’s portrait.
Traditionally, regardless of party affiliation, the sitting president has often hosted their predecessor for such unveilings. Democrat Bill Clinton did this for Republican George HW Bush, and George W Bush did the same for Clinton.
In 2012, the Obamas hosted George W Bush and his wife, Laura, for the unveiling of Bush’s official portrait at the White House.
However, there was an unexplained pause when Trump did not host Obama during his first term.
