Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday backed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and said the Bill would favour the maximum Muslim population in the country.
Shah, speaking at CNN-News18’s Rising Bharat Summit, had on Wednesday said that only some leaders in the Muslim community were protesting against the Bill and that the Congress is protesting the legislation despite the minority being empowered through the new law.
“Majority of Muslims are in favour of the Waqf Bill, Home Minister Amit Shah said it rightly,” Naqvi said.
“This will benefit all the Muslims. A very few people are spreading lies about Waqf,” he added.
During the Summit, Shah also questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence during the debate in Parliament over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in both Houses last week.
He also attacked Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi for being absent during the intense discussion.
Earlier the same day, former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also questioned Rahul Gandhi if he was uncomfortable with the amended Waqf Act giving voice to the poor and backward Muslims besides women.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also countered the Congress leader’s charge that the Centre had failed to respond to the US tariff move.
