Empuraan, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, has taken the box office by storm from the very first day. Not only did it outpace Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava during its opening weekend, but it has also shattered records along the way. The film has made history as the first Malayalam movie to cross Rs 100 crore in worldwide share. Well, it shows no sign of slowing down now.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 94.12 crore net in its ten-day run.

The trade website reported that L2: Empuraan earned an estimated Rs 2.97 crore net on its second Saturday, pushing its total India net collection to Rs 94.12 crore. The Malayalam blockbuster had a stellar start with an opening day collection of Rs 21 crore, followed by Rs 11.1 crore on its first Saturday and Rs 13.25 crore on Sunday. In its first week, it amassed Rs 84.35 crore net in India. During the second week, it brought in Rs 3.9 crore on Thursday and Rs 2.9 crore on Friday. By Day 6 (Tuesday), collections had shown a slight dip, but the numbers appear to be holding steady.

Despite the rave reviews, L2: Empuraan has landed in hot water. The film, which weaves a fictional storyline around the 2002 Gujarat riots, sparked controversy, with some groups calling it “anti-national.” The CBFC stepped in, suggesting several cuts, and the makers went along with it—trimming a total of 24 scenes. The Gujarat riots-related sequences were tweaked, and after the edits, the film got a fresh certificate. In total, 2 minutes and 8 seconds were chopped from the original version.

In L2: Empuraan, Mohanlal reprises his iconic role as Stephen Nedumpally, aka Khureshi Ab’raam. This time, with the help of Zayed (Prithviraj Sukumaran), he makes a powerful return from overseas, setting his sights back home. His mission? To stop Chief Minister Jathin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) and take control of the game once again.

Empuraan received majorly positive reviews from all. News18 Showsha’s review of the film read, “Despite its dense plot, Empuraan serves as a standalone film. While it is still a sequel to Lucifer, it just takes the plot to a new dimension where the stakes are humongous. Two narratives unfold simultaneously. One is about the local problem in Kerala, which requires the return of Stephen, and the second one deals with an international conflict between two crime syndicates. Prithviraj and Murali Gopy manage to find a common point to merge the two narratives, which feels a bit forced. However, the direction and the writing do convince you and buy into the plot.”
