Ethan Hunt is the name that Tom Cruise turned into a legend. Over the years, he made the character as the ultimate action hero through the Mission: Impossible series. Now, the series is heading towards its final chapter and Cruise is once again taking things to another level. He is currently 62 and the franchise has been a major part of his career for almost two decades.

At CinemaCon 2025, Cruise returned to the stage at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum in Las Vegas. It was his first in-person appearance at the event since the pandemic. He shared a new teaser clip of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning which will serve as the final part of the long-running franchise.

The new footage shows Cruise doing what he does best. He was hanging from a flying biplane as it turned upside down mid-air. Another scene shows him crawling on top of the aircraft while it is still flying. He is also shown jumping off an aircraft carrier. The action scenes, just like in previous movies, are intense and this time, the nuclear missiles are also involved. Henry Czerny returns as Kittridge and can be heard saying, “If we want to bring the world back to the brink, we have to deal with him.”

The film is a direct follow-up to 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which ended with a cliffhanger. That film showed the world under threat from a rogue, sentient AI known as The Entity. Now, The Final Reckoning continues the story and is expected to serve as Cruise’s farewell to the role.

Before showing the new scenes from the film, Tom honoured the director, Christopher McQuarrie who was named CinemaCon’s “Director of the Year.” Cruise praised him for his work on films like Top Gun: Maverick and also mentioned his contributions to other movies, such as World War Z with Brad Pitt.

The actor also spoke about the time they worked on Dead Reckoning together. He said the film was important not just for them but for the whole industry as it helped create safety guidelines during the pandemic.

“He didn’t do it for personal glory, but in recognition of the responsibility we had for others. We were able to keep people working safely throughout that period,” Cruise said.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning features many returning cast members such as Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett and Rolf Saxon. The new faces in the film include Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham and Nick Offerman. Director McQuarrie wrote the script with Erik Jendresen. He is also producing the film along with Cruise. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Chris Brock serve as executive producers.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is set to make its theatrical debut on May 23.
