Aamir Khan issued a statement on Friday morning to mourn the loss of veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar’s death. The Bollywood superstar mentioned that Kumar was not just an actor but an institution. He further mentioned that he had learnt so much watching Kumar’s films.

“Manoj Kumar was not just an actor and film-maker, he was an institution. I have learnt so much watching his films. His films were often based on important social themes, which brought him really close to the common man. My heartfelt condolences to his family 🙏🏽,” the statement read.

Earlier today, Akshay Kumar also took to his X handle to pen down an emotional tribute to Kumar. “I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. And if we actors won’t take the lead in showing this emotion, who will? Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti 🙏,” he wrote.

Among others, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, filmmaker Karan Johar, Madhur Bhandarkar and Vivek Agnihotri also remembered Manoj Kumar via their respective social media handles.

Manoj Kumar passed away in the wee hours of April 4. His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed the news of his death and told the news agency ANI, “My father, Manoj Kumar, passed away today at 3:30 AM at Kokilaben Hospital. He had been feeling unwell for a long time, but he fought every hurdle with resilience and grace. He peacefully breathed his last by God’s grace and Sai Baba’s blessings. His cremation will take place tomorrow. Sia Ram.”

Manoj Kumar was known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes. Some of his popular works include “Shaheed” (1965), “Upkar” (1967), “Purab Aur Paschim” (1970), and “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” (1974). Kumar also directed several other popular films like “Hariyali Aur Raasta”, “Woh Kaun Thi”, “Himalaya Ki God Mein”, “Do Badan”, “Patthar Ke Sanam”, “Neel Kamal”, and “Kranti”. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
