Actor Vidyut Jammwal has spoken out in support of comedian Kunal Kamra, who’s been facing intense backlash over his recent stand-up show Naya Bharat at Mumbai’s Habitat Studio. The controversy erupted after Kamra took jabs at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, referring to him as a “gaddar” (traitor) and even parodying him with a song set to the tune of Dil Toh Pagal Hai.

While Kamra now faces legal heat for his performance, including FIRs and political outrage, Jammwal questioned the selective outrage and double standards surrounding freedom of expression. On Sunday, the actor took to Instagram to highlight what he called a glaring inconsistency: the silence around Kamaal R. Khan’s (KRK) long history of offensive remarks.

Jammwal posted a video compilation of KRK making derogatory and communal comments about various actresses, which included body-shaming, colour-shaming, and inflammatory statements. Alongside the video, he shared a powerful quote from the Bhagavad Gita: “GITA CHAPTER 2 VERSE 31, MEANING – Kshatriya, you should not waver, for there is nothing more auspicious for a warrior than a RIGHTEOUS WAR.”

He continued, “Here is a man, taking refuge outside the country, drawing attention by spewing venom against the country and even worse—our women. No one stops to question his intent or mobilises to bring him down.”

Referring back to Kamra’s situation, Jammwal added, “But we will take a stand-up comedian to task—for evoking strong emotions because of his act. Do we uphold the rights of politicians over our nation and our women?”

The post quickly drew support from fellow industry members. Actress Richa Chadha commented, “I took him to court. Why can’t others?” while producer Ektaa Kapoor added, “Those who follow him enable him! Good on you for calling him out.”

Meanwhile, Kunal Kamra has secured interim anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court in relation to the first FIR lodged against him. The debate around his set continues to raise important questions on where the line between satire and sedition is being drawn—and who gets to decide.
