A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida lost his lifelong savings of over Rs 6.5 crore after meeting a woman on a dating app, who deceived him into investing in an online trading app.

The victim, identified as Daljit Singh, a businessman residing in Noida’s Sector 36, and the owner of a Delhi-based firm, lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police on Wednesday, claiming that the woman, who he met on a dating app, lured him by claiming that he could earn profits even without any previous experience, according to multiple media reports.

As per the complaint, Singh, who was a divorcee, created a profile on a dating app to give love another chance. In December 2024, he matched with a woman named Anita Chauhan. The woman claimed to be from Hyderabad. From casual greetings to more intense discussions, the duo became good friends.

Gradually, Chauhan persuaded him to invest in the trading website. Singh said that he had booked Rs 24,000 in profits on an initial investment of Rs 3.2 lakh. Singh got encouraged and his trust got reinforced after transferring the profit into his bank account.

The victim further claimed that he invested his lifelong savings of about Rs 4.5 crore and took a loan of Rs 2 crore on Chauhan’s suggestion for re-investment. He claimed that he transferred a total of Rs 6.5 crore to 25 bank accounts through 30 different transactions.

The scam started to unravel when Singh attempted another withdrawal. This time, he was told he needed to deposit 30 per cent of his investment as a processing fee and an additional exchange service fee of Rs 61 lakh. When he refused, communication with Chauhan was suddenly cut off. Two of the three trading websites she had recommended were no longer accessible.

Singh got suspicious and lodged a complaint at Cyber Police Station in Noida Sector-36.

Upon investigation, Chauhan’s dating app profile turned out to be fake. Police are now trying to gather information on the accounts to which the money was transferred.
