The debate around nepotism seems far from over. While some star kids highlight the negative repercussions of being a part of the industry, others take pride in their privilege. Prithviraj Sukumaran falls in the second category. Gearing up for the release of his upcoming film L2: Empuraan, the actor-director recently sat down for a chat to talk about the impact of his father’s legacy on his career. Further, he admitted that he is a complete “nepo product.”
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Prithviraj Sukumaran reflected on his privilege and said, “I only got my first film because of my surname. I’m a complete nepo product.” Prithviraj is the son of the late Sukumaran, one of the most sought-after names in Malayalam cinema in the 70s and 80s. Although the superstar passed away in 1997, the legacy he left behind helped Prithviraj in his acting career, as the actor admitted during the interaction.
About Prithviraj Sukumaran’s upcoming directorial venture L2: Empuraan, the film is a sequel to his 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. It stars Mohanlal in the lead role whereas Prithviraj will be seen in an extended cameo. Apart from these two, the film boasts a talented bunch of stars from Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi cinema as well.
Talking about onboarding the actors from across the industries, the actor added, “You are living in the easiest of times to get into cinema, in any medium you want to work in. Even if you create a great Instagram Reel today, you get noticed. You can do a great podcast, and people start talking about you.”
L2: Empuraan is being touted to be the biggest Malayalam film ever, in terms of its scale and cost. In a massive opening at the ticket window, after the film’s advance bookings opened on Friday, nearly a lakh tickets in its first hour were sold, reportedly making it the highest-ever for an Indian film. The film will be released on March 27.
Prithviraj Sukumuran has carved a niche for himself in films across all industries. He made his Bollywood debut with Aiyaa, starring Rani Mukerji in the lead role. His last Hindi film was Bade Miyan Chote Miyan wherein he played the antagonist against Tiger Shroff and Akshay Kumar.
