Gerard Butler is finally back as the grizzled lawman Nick O’Brien in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The action-packed sequel has premiered on Netflix (globally), following O’Brien’s journey to Europe as he aims to track down the criminal mastermind Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr). The film puts the duo in a high-stakes diamond heist set in the French city of Nice. The film opened in theatres in January this year, collecting nearly $60 million globally. In India, the film will be available on Lionsgate from March 28.
Having received a positive response in theatres, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is now equally winning hearts on the OTT platform. The first reactions to the film have been mostly positive. A fan wrote, “I just finished Den of Thieves 2; good movie. Mox rules!” while another remarked, “Whoever said Den of Thieves 2 was trash You are crazy, this s**t kinda cool.”
“Just watched Den of Thieves 2, amazing bro! You working with the great Gerard Butler is amazing. Also, you getting to sit and talk to the best wrestlers of today is the best. Always been a fan of yours, much respect,” another comment read. A fan shared anticipation for the third part and added, “Watched Den of Thieves 2 tonight and enjoyed it. The trick for 3 now will be to step it up another notch and bring in another big name while also making sure to bring back supporting cast members from this one AND the first one to round out Donnie’s crew.”
While many sounded impressed with the sequel, others wondered why the film was released on OTT shortly after opening in theatres. However, Den of Thieves 2 also had a fair share of criticism on the internet. A viewer commented, “Den of Thieves 2 was a little confusing at some parts, but overall it was dope,” while another added, “Watching Den of Thieves 2 knowing I’m about to fall asleep.”
Coming back to the film, directed by Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves 2 follows up on the gritty narrative of the 2018 original with Butler’s character now facing a personal crisis after his divorce and exit from the LAPD. Fans couldn’t but gush over Butler and Jackson Jr.’s onscreen presence, with the building tension and intensity driving much of the appeal. Among others, it includes actors like Evin Ahmad, Salvatore Esposito, and Fortunato Cerlino in key roles. On the heels of the film’s sequel, the makers are already moving on with the third part. The official X handle of the film confirmed Den of Thieves 3 is in development.
