Police in the city of Thane filed a case against unknown thieves after thieves broke into 14 shops and stole around ₹27,000 from eight shops. Police told news agency Hindustan Times that thieves broke into a doctor’s clinic, an Ayurvedic store, a paint shop and a salon by breaking open their shutters.
The thieves’ bid to steal more money failed because most shops received payments through digital transactions, the police told the newspaper. The incident has raised law and order concerns in the city and comes after a sword-wielding gang went on threatening shopkeepers in Vartak Nagar.
“On Tuesday, I felt bad as I didn’t earn enough, and whatever I did, they were through online payments, so I had no cash in the drawer. At 7am on Wednesday, I got a call from someone who lives in the building opposite my shop, telling me my shutter had been broken,” a carpenter whose shop was broken into was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
A dentist whose clinic was broken into highlighted that this is the second time her shop was targeted. Her shop was targeted eight years ago as well.
The locals raised doubts on the effectiveness of the night patrol in the area. CCTV footage showed that thieves were in the area in the wee hours of the morning.
CCTV footage accessed by local news portal Thane Live showed a man in his shorts and t-shirt prying open the shutter with his hands and then entering inside the shop and emptying the cash counter.
