Jennie is the latest BLACKPINK member to have found herself at the centre of a controversy. The 29-year-old K-pop idol, who has been riding high on the success of her debut solo album, Ruby, is now facing intense scrutiny on the internet following her latest live performance. On one hand, she has been accused of lip-syncing. On the other hand, some online users felt that Jennie’s background dancers had more energy than her.

The BLACKPINK star kicked off her much-awaited solo tour, The Ruby Experience, in Los Angeles on March 6, treating her fans to the first-ever live rendition of the tracks from her new album. Following the show, clips of her performance quickly made their way online, sparking heated discussions. While her performances filled the air with excitement, it did not last for long as the social media users soon erupted with varying opinions.

In a Reddit post titled “Jennie has started her first solo tour, ‘The Ruby Experience,’” online users expressed their opinions on her performance, with many highlighting how her background dancers outshined her.

One user said, “The backup dancers are absolutely eating….and that makes her look even worse”

Another quipped, “Her album is fun, but this performance looks rough.”

“The backup dancers are devouring, and she looks like she’s filming a TikTok,” read a comment.

Another user wrote, “This is a bit sad, she’s clearly not having fun & drops her face performance enough that you can see her ‘this is exhausting’ face at 10 seconds…..WAIT IS SHE SUPPOSED TO BE SINGING? Oh dear.”

“This is the worst lip-syncing I’ve ever seen,” penned a different user.

Earlier, Jennie faced controversy over her song Like Jennie, a pre-release single from her solo album. The track sparked buzz after BLACKPINK and Bollywood fans noticed a striking resemblance between Like Jennie and the intro theme featuring Alia Bhatt as Rani in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Social media was soon flooded with comparison videos, with some dismissing it as a coincidence, while others remained unconvinced.

Although Jennie chose not to respond, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani composer Pritam Chakraborty defended her. He remarked, “Rani and Jennie are names that rhyme, so a similar flow in one phrase doesn’t make it a copy.” He further noted that minor similarities in music are “bound to happen.”
